Position Summary
Provide safe, high-quality nursing care to adult patients on a Medical-Surgical unit. The Registered Nurse (RN) uses the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care; coordinates with the interdisciplinary team; and ensures timely documentation, patient education, and discharge planning.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive assessments, identify patient needs, and develop individualized plans of care.
- Administer medications, IV therapies, blood products, and treatments per orders and policy; monitor for adverse reactions.
- Interpret vital signs, labs, and clinical changes; escalate concerns promptly using appropriate communication and chain of command.
- Provide wound care, postoperative care, and management of common med-surg conditions (e.g., pneumonia, diabetes, CHF, COPD).
- Coordinate admissions, transfers, and discharges; deliver patient/family education and discharge instructions.
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Collaborate with physicians, case management, therapy, and ancillary services to support patient goals and throughput.
- Follow infection prevention, medication safety, fall prevention, and other quality/safety standards.
- Respond to emergencies, participate in rapid response/code situations as trained, and support unit-based initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Current, unrestricted RN license in North Carolina (or compact multistate RN license eligible to practice in NC).
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (ADN or BSN required).
- Current BLS (American Heart Association) certification required prior to start.
- 1+ year of recent acute care Medical-Surgical RN experience preferred; new graduates may be considered with applicable clinical training and willingness to complete orientation.
- Ability to safely perform essential functions, including standing/walking for extended periods and assisting with patient handling (up to 50 lbs with appropriate equipment/support).
- Strong clinical judgment, communication, and teamwork skills; commitment to patient-centered care.
- Ability to work nights, including weekends/holidays as scheduled.
Preferred Qualifications
- BSN preferred.
- ACLS preferred (may be required based on unit needs).
- Experience with telemetry, EHR charting, and high-acuity patient assignments.
Work Environment & Compliance
Work is performed in a fast-paced inpatient setting with frequent interruptions and competing priorities. Employment is contingent upon meeting all compliance requirements, which may include background check, drug screening, immunizations, and TB/respirator clearance in accordance with policy and applicable law.
