Position Summary
Provide safe, timely, and evidence-based nursing care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department with acute illness or injury. The Emergency Room Registered Nurse performs rapid assessment, prioritization, intervention, and ongoing reassessment in a fast-paced environment while collaborating closely with the interdisciplinary team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform triage, focused assessments, and initiate emergency interventions per protocols and provider orders.
- Administer medications, fluids, blood products, and treatments; monitor for therapeutic response and adverse reactions.
- Interpret and respond to critical changes in patient condition; activate rapid response/code procedures as needed.
- Initiate and manage IV access, wound care, splinting, cardiac monitoring, oxygen therapy, and other ED procedures within scope.
- Coordinate care with providers, respiratory therapy, imaging, lab, and consulting services; facilitate admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Provide patient/family education, discharge instructions, and follow-up guidance; ensure understanding and documentation.
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic health record, including assessments, interventions, and patient responses.
- Support a culture of safety, infection prevention, and quality improvement; comply with regulatory and facility standards.
Required Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina or compact/multistate privilege eligible to practice in NC.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (ADN or BSN).
- Current BLS (AHA) certification.
- Current ACLS (AHA) certification or ability to obtain within required timeframe.
- PALS (AHA) and/or ENPC preferred; may be required based on patient population.
- Minimum of 1 year of recent acute care or emergency nursing experience preferred; new graduates may be considered with relevant clinical experience and strong assessment skills.
- Ability to work 12-hour night shifts, including weekends and holidays as scheduled.
- Strong critical thinking, communication, de-escalation, and teamwork skills in high-acuity situations.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Fast-paced emergency setting with frequent interruptions and high patient volume.
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods; lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs with assistance as needed.
- May require use of PPE and exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and hazardous materials per safety protocols.
